The latest development on the headset market, castAR, is not only suited for (projected) AR; a clip-on also creates VR experiences. Technical Illusions’ founders Jeri Ellsworth and Rick Johnson developed the headset and it has a key selling point: it wraps up three devices into one. It is an AR / VR headset as well as a game controller. Ellsworth and Johnson have started a Kickerstarter campaign to get the needed backers. Read more about castAR on Engadget.

Artists Davy and Kristin McGuire created a theatrical installation, The Icebook, made out of paper. A pop-up book is paired with projection mapping and accompanied by music, the result is unique display of storytelling. The dark and atmospheric fable relates one man’s journey into the wilderness.

How cool would it be if you could build your own robot? French sculptor and model-maker, Gael Langevin, has made that dream a reality. You can download the open source files and print out parts of the inMoov robot on a 3D-printer. Some assembly is required, but there is a whole community of inMoovers on hand to offer assistance should you run into some problems.

Here is an interesting take on a promotional ad: Lexus’ latest model, IS Hybrid, is put through its paces with former Formula One driver Jarno Trulli behind the wheel playing a specially designed game called Trace Your Road. Some of Lexus’ Facebook fans sat next to Trulli with an iPad and were asked to ‘draw’ a road which was then projected on the floor of an empty airplane hangar. Their driver followed it in order to score points, gamification style driving ensues!

Transreal Topologies will be held in conjunction with The International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality (Adelaide, Australia). The exhibition takes place from 1 till 5 October 2013. It explores the field of mixed and augmented reality art (MARart), presenting a range of artists that are contributing to the development of a unique language for MARart as both a medium and area of inquiry. The exhibition focuses on modes of representation that deal with the augmentation of data beyond traditional surfaces in order to merge virtual and real. No less than three events are being organised in connection with the 3D Printshow exhibition in 2013. Starting off in London from 7 till 9 November, followed by Paris from 15 till 16 November 2013 and concluding in New York with an exhibition held from 13 till 14 February 2014. In London, some of the works on display include life-sized printouts of dinosaurs’ body parts(!) and a so-called Fashion Experience. Last weekend, 6-7 September 2013, British media art centre FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology) in Liverpool hosted a unique exhibition together with German arts centre Bauhaus in Dessau. Ready to Cloud is an installation created by Berlin-based art collective The Constitute. For this installation the artists use 3D-scans of participants and load them into the Cloud, thereby ‘beaming’ their avatar in real-time from Liverpool to Dessau or vice versa. Teleportation as is imagined in Star Trek was one of The Constitute’s sources of inspiration.

Recently, Sony released its latest head-mounted display: HMZ-T3. The headset does not include eye-trackers or cameras, and this means that AR or VR are not part of the package. On the other hand, gaming or watching movies are said to become a more immersive experience, according to a review on Engadget’s website. Additionally, the headset is available with a wired or wireless option, and it can also connect with Android devices.

Leading new media scholar, Lev Manovich, has published his latest book: Software Takes Command (2013). According to Manovich, Software has replaced a diverse array of physical, mechanical, and electronic technologies used before 21st century to create, store, distribute and interact with cultural artifacts. It has become our interface to the world, to others, to our memory and our imagination - a universal language through which the world speaks, and a universal engine on which the world runs. What electricity and combustion engine were to the early 20th century, software is to the early 21st century. Offering the the first theoretical and historical account of software for media authoring and its effects on the practice and the very concept of ‘media,’ the author of The Language of New Media (2001) develops his own theory for this rapidly-growing, always-changing field.

The province Noord-Holland believes that they have made cultural heritage available to the greater public with their Street Museum app. Images of times gone-by are visualised at different location in seven regions (Alkmaar and surrounding areas, Amsterdam, Den Helder, Het Gooi region, Hoorn and the Zaanstreek). Old photos, postcards and paintings of and from Noord-Holland are placed over the current situation; sounds like a type of AR! For convenience (and to avoid lengthy download times), the files can be downloaded per region. Simply aim your smartphone’s camera at a historical location to enable the app to recognise it via GPS. Following that, a snapshot from the past is revealed. By aid of Google Maps a map can be prompted to discover more old images.

Writer Tim Maughan wrote Paintwork, a collection of short science-fiction stories. Recently he made a short film, a montage of stills and CGI, with the same name. Paintwork presents a cyberpunk inspired vision of the near-future. A narrator tells the story of “the best QR-writer” in South-Bristol (UK) who mixes AR with graffiti.

The exhibition Gimme More ran from 21 February till 2 March 2013 at the Eyebeam Art + Technology Center in New York. The idea behind the exhibition was the way in which AR artworks highlights the relationship between physical and virtual reality. Allison Meier wrote an enthusiastic review on Hyperallergic about Gimme More, but the author is not entirely convinced whether or not AR is the next ‘immediate’ medium – something the exhibit’s organisers had put forward. According to Meier, the artworks are too unstable from time to time and, perhaps, are too heavily reliant on technology.

He is often referred to as the “father of wearable computing,” Steve Mann. The Canadian researcher and inventor has over 35 years of experience in researching the various ways to add digital layers of information onto the physical world. Recently, Mann has written an article about his extensive research into headset design. Numerous reports have circulated the last several months about AR-headset design’s latest developments. Mann has reservations concerning the technical progress of Google’s Project Glass.

The American company WobbleWorks has developed a pen, the 3Doodler, which allows you to draw in three dimensions! In fact, the 3Doodler enables you to print your drawing in real-time without the high costs of a 3D-printer. Additionally, software is not needed; simply plug the pen in an electrical socket. The pen uses a similar type of plastic also used by most 3D printers. WobbleWorks recently started a campaign on Kickstarter.

The digital creative agency Appshaker creates advertising campaigns for well-known companies such as Coca-Cola and the BBC; and they often use AR to that effect. Appshaker’s approach comes forward in the message they wish to convey with their campaigns. The manner in which that is accomplished is informed by the message itself. In the Coca-Cola and WWF campaign, Appshaker used a broadcast AR system where animations are added to live camera footage. Ultimately, the main goal is to offer immersive experiences. Aside from that, the agency links their campaigns to social media in order to generate brand awareness for Coca-Cola, as well as in the case of Arctic Home, promote awareness about climate change and polar bears’ disappearing natural habitat.

Do you find it difficult to imagine how that chair from an interior design catalogue will look in your living room? With the AR app from Decolabs and twnkls users no longer need to picture it in their minds; they can decorate their homes with furniture from catalogues linked to the app. In order to place virtual furniture in your living room, you take a picture of the room with an iPad and after that you simply pick out some pieces from the catalogues. This allows users to judge for themselves whether or not a particular chair actually compliments their other furniture pieces or fits in with the room’s layout. With Grasp users’ hand and finger movements are tracked and mapped. As a result, an interface can be controlled by way of hand gestures. Omek Interactive’s system works with a new type camera, one that is optimised for close range recording. Because the cameras will be produced as modules, they can be built into a PC or tablet’s case. In the spring of 2013 Grasp’s beta version will be available.

IllumiRoom is a proof-of-concept system developed by Microsoft Research which projects images in the space surrounding a television. A Kinect for Windows and a projector blurs the lines between the images on a television and physical space. According to the developers, the system creates an entirely new gaming experience.

‘Famous New Media Artist’ Jeremy Bailey was funded by crowdfunding website Kickstarter. In this project Bailey will ‘paint’ portraits with AR. Kickstarter’s funders are put in the spotlight in Bailey’s project; he intends to make portraits, enhanced with an AR layer, of the largely anonymous group of financial backers. Bailey’s idea is loosely based on portraits by old masters who painted important and powerful people. According to Bailey, this not only provided an income, but also gave artists the opportunity to show their technique.

Dutch architect Janjaap Ruijssenaars from Universe Architects in Amsterdam has designed a house which will be partially constructed from pieces printed out on a 3D-printer! The aim is to put the pieces of the so-called Landscape House together no later than 2014. Ruijssenaars has worked with artist and mathematician Rinus Roelofs on this project. D-Shape is the name of the enormous printer, designed by Italian inventor Enrico Dini, set out to print out the contours of the house. Read more about this ambitious project on 3ders’ website.

McDonald’s has launched an app that allows users to track the origins of the ingredients in the food they’ve bought. TrackMyMacca’s follows the supply chain of food and uses augmented reality to display the results in an attempt to dispel some of the myths around the restaurant’s processing procedures.The app was created by DDB Australia in partnership with production company Acne Production, video house And so they were, media agency OMD and Mango PR.

Dutch company Shapeways specialises in 3D printing and gives some more insight into the potential of this technology for the creative industry. In a video on The Creators Project's website several designers talk about how 3D printing helps them in their design process.
